If you’re looking to find love, know that healthy relationship building looks different in every phase of your life. As you get older (and wiser!), your standards evolve, and what you’re looking for in a partner changes, too. And how to find love in your life depends on whether you’re dating in your 20s, 30s, or 40s and the current circumstances of your life.
Feeling a bit lost and need tips of a healthy relationship journey? Keep reading for advice on navigating dating to find love and meaningful connections.
Trying to find love in your 20s can feel impossible! Sure, some people find their person in their 20s, but that’s not the case for most people. A lot of us are just learning the foundations of healthy relationship building.
Follow these tips to rock your dating life in your 20s.
Your 20s are the perfect opportunity to explore what you like (and don’t like) in a partner. This is when you develop your tastes and dealbreakers. Maybe you’ve just started dating or haven’t dated that many people. But don’t limit yourself to what you think your type is! Date a wide variety of people from all backgrounds.
In your 20s, you’re probably in college or coming into your own. Take advantage of your newfound freedom to get out there and date for fun. (You don’t have as many responsibilities now, so take the time to focus on yourself while you can!) Go to parties or events to meet new people. Socialize and make friends and really enjoy figuring out how to find love in your life.
Never feel pressured to do anything you aren’t comfortable with. In your 20s, you might feel like you need to do certain things to make someone like you. Nope! Never let someone make you cross your personal boundaries. No relationship or date is worth compromising your standards.
You made it through your 20s, and you’ve probably got lots of fun dating stories, right? Maybe you didn’t find love. Perhaps you thought you did but got your heart broken—time to leave all that behind. You’re more experienced now and have a better idea of what you want!
Keep these tips in mind when dating in your 30s.
Never, I repeat, NEVER compare yourself to anyone else’s dating life in your 30s. All those wedding and engagement photos on social media? They might make you feel like you’re behind, but you’re not! Try to be happy for your friends and family, but don’t feel bad about where you are on your journey to find love. Remember, everyone has their own path and timeline!
The best tips of a healthy relationship have to include keeping your standards high. Don’t lower your expectations just because you don’t want to be single anymore or you’re tired of dating. Silly things like height or where they went to college don’t matter. But how they treat you and others or having a stable job are standards you shouldn’t compromise on.
Let’s be honest: How to find love in your life starts with loving yourself and feeling confident. In your 20s, feeling insecure is pretty common. But the best part about dating in your 30s? Your newfound self-confidence! You know your worth and don’t care what people think about you anymore. You don’t let rejection get you down! And there’s nothing sexier than confidence.
Welcome to dating in your 40s! At this point, you know what you want in a partner, and you have healthy boundaries and standards. You’re less likely to compromise on your dealbreakers. And wow! It’s empowering to know you’ll never settle for less.
Remember these tips to find love in your 40s.
In your 40s, many of your dates will have kids or work schedules, so you might have to reschedule or cancel dates. It’s frustrating but be patient! Your date might have less free time, and you won’t be at the top of their priority list (yet,), and that’s okay.
You’ve probably been through your fair share of dates and relationships by now. The same goes for the people you’re dating. But no one should apologize for being themselves and the mistakes they’ve made along the way. In your 40s, you just want to be accepted, flaws and all, so don’t let your past dictate how you date now.
By the time you reach your 40s, you’ve developed some dating intuition. Remember to always trust your instincts and avoid dating red flags. You’ll be less phased by superficial qualities (you know, the ones that used to be at the top of your list!) and be on the lookout for shared values. But if something feels off, trust yourself and that feeling in your gut—it’s rarely wrong!
