We’ve all heard the cliché about “love at first sight,” which implies that it’s possible to fall in love just by seeing someone. But what if we remove sight altogether? That’s the premise behind Love is Blind on Netflix.
The singles on the wildly popular series want to find love and a serious relationship. The only catch? They have to do it on camera. Oh, and they have to get engaged before ever seeing each other. Yep, you read that right!
The Love Is Blind new series is available on Netflix, but if you haven’t seen any episodes yet, tread carefully! Spoilers ahead!
If you’ve never seen the show, here are a few basics you need to know:
Social media’s abuzz over the Love Is Blind new season. We’re all just hopeless romantics, right? Okay, fine, we’ll be honest: We love a bit of drama, too!
With modern dating apps and the impacts of mindless swiping, dating anxiety is real. Even though Love Is Blind challenges dating app culture by eliminating swiping based on looks alone, the daters’ other insecurities come out play. Those of us navigating dating apps know: It’s common for daters to talk to multiple people at once, just like on the show.
And the idea of never really feeling confident the person you’re dating will be the one you end up in a serious relationship with makes the show very relatable.
Most of the Love Is Blind contestants genuinely want to get married and find love. But the Netflix series makes us wonder if love truly is blind. Can you fall in love with someone just by hearing their voice and building an emotional connection?
Here are some lessons we’ve learned from watching Love Is Blind on Netflix:
When you’re tired of dating, it’s easy to look past red flags in the early stages, especially when you’re building an emotional bond with your date, like the Love Is Blind cast does in the pods. But where do you draw the line – what will you accept and what will you let slide?
What might be obvious red flags for viewers are rationalized by the Love Is Blind daters as they get to know their potential partners in the pods. For example, Shayne reveals to Natalie that he continued to pursue another contestant even though they’d established a connection. Natalie told Shayne she felt misled, and he had a complete freak-out moment and almost quit the show. Spoiler alert: They got engaged anyway. (Ahh, love!)
This couple had their ups and downs throughout the show and were one of the most talked about pairs. But if Natalie hadn’t overlooked red flags about Shayne’s behavior early on, she might have avoided a blowout fight the night before their wedding and awkwardness at the altar. We thought Shayne looked a bit “on edge” at the wedding ceremony, to say the least.
Stay away from any dater obsessed with how much you weigh. In the pods, Shake seemed to miss the entire point of this show. While chatting with Deepti in the pods, he asked if she’d like a man putting her on her shoulders at a concert.
After she replied yes, he said, and I quote, “Will I have trouble picking you up?”
“That comes off very superficial,” Deepti replied.
We had to shake our heads at this actual Love is Blind quote. (Pun intended. And yes, we’re looking at you, Shake.)
Not only did Shake ask multiple daters similar questions trying to find out their size, but he did this with Deepti after she was open with him about her body insecurities. If you’ve seen the show, you know that (spoiler alert!) they still got engaged. (Deepti might’ve needed to read the last lesson on overlooking red flags…) Shake then let everyone know how he wasn’t attracted to Deepti once seeing her in person.
Basically, steer clear of anyone who emulates shallowness over depth.
Love Is Blind on Netflix sets out to prove that physical appearance doesn’t dictate whether you fall in love. Even though they hadn’t seen each other beforehand, six couples proposed. The show initially only planned to follow five couples but accommodated the extra relationship and admitted they were surprised how successful the pods were.
On the season finale of the Love Is Blind new season, two of the original couples said “I do” at the altar. And two couples are still married now.
So did the ultimate dating experiment work? Yes! People fell in love without seeing each other first. Even though not everyone lasted, there were successes and plenty of lessons learned.
